Periodontitis is an inflammation of the tissue supporting the teeth. That tissue is formed of gums, periodontal bone and ligament and cement. These results in various symptoms such as bleeding gums, gum hypertrophy, purulent secretions from the gums, foul smell, and further on gum recession, tooth mobility and finally the expulsion of the teeth.
Treatment always begins with a professional cleaning followed by the specific treatment of root planning and subgingival curettage to ensure the removal of inflamed and infected tissues from the tooth and from the periodontal pocket, followed by a reattachment of the gum to the tooth. In certain situations surgical treatments are recommended: flap surgery, gum grafts, bone grafts or connective tissue grafts used to obtain stable soft tissue.
Maintenance: because periodontitis can’t be healed, we can only stop its evolution, it is particularly important for patients to come for regular check-ups and cleaning.
